The Phoenix heat was unbearable. With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, the summer atmosphere created an almost visible barrier to people hoping to venture away from their Phoenix furniture for the July afternoon.
Inside, the situation was not much better. Even the normally cool leather furniture in Phoenix threatened to stick to the skin after a few minutes. The only respite would be to turn the air conditioner colder, but it could only do so much. Supposedly, an air conditioner could only bring the temperature down twenty degrees from that of the Phoenix summer. That meant that it was no cooler than eighty degrees. Still, it would be cooler if I could somehow wedge myself inside the 40 degree refrigerator until winter came.
The upholstered furniture felt cool temporarily until body heat warmed it. At which point, I began to play musical chairs with the furniture in the house, moving from the leather sofa, to the recliner, to the desk chair. This continued until I ran out of unused furniture in the living room, so I made my way to the dining room furniture.
There the wood dining chairs stayed cooler a bit longer than the upholstery or leather, but they, too soon warmed up. Furniture hopping was nothing new to Phoenix furniture, and for many, seemed a closeted summer pass time.
It would be worse in the car where the interior leather auto furniture had sat in the sun for several hours. The seats in the car would need extra leather protectant against the baking solar rays. The summer sun was a especially detretimental to outdoor Phoenix furniture. Between the harsh sun and the desert sands, putting out in Phoenix furniture on your patio was almost a waste of money. Last year, in Phoenix, furniture had to be replaced at my house twice because it was left too long exposed to the sun, heat, and dry desert air.
Having home furniture in Phoenix required extra care, but not too much. Just a little bit more furniture polish and fabric and leather protectant was all that was needed to care for Phoenix furniture. It really becomes an issue in the summer, and if neglected, replacement of the piece is almost always necessary. Phoenix furniture stores love the extra business that they receive from people who fail to care for their Phoenix furniture.
No amount of care, though, could avoid the heat. The only way to keep cool during the summer seemed to be to play Phoenix furniture chairs – the same musical chairs with household furnishings I had engaged in earlier. Dropping the air conditioner helped slightly, but compared to the outside temperature, twenty degrees cooler inside was a welcome respite.
